By using a single-layered sheath-core bio-fiber with a sodium acetate buffer solution, the photothermal effect can be controlled by the solution properties. For example, the fabricated bio-fiber demonstrated efficient heating and a high signal-to-noise ratio of 800% at 653 nm, a value which can be used to evaluate the photothermal effect when it is used for the sensing of the properties of the surrounding medium. The radius of the bio-fiber, and consequently the radius of the waveguide modes, was also successfully controlled by polymer grafting with poly-L-lysine (PLL) within a solution of the bio-fiber.
